Lately I've heard from a couple of fans who thought they had to own a Nook, Kindle, or similar device to download and read eBooks. Not So!!
Dreamspinner Press, Smashwords, and other sites, offer their eBooks in several formats, and most of them allow you to download them more than once in different formats.
All you need is to download an eBook in PDF format, and you can easily read it on your computer.
NOTE: As far as I know, Amazon and Barnes & Noble only offer Kindle and Nook versions respectively.

If you buy from the specific publishers (like Etienne mentioned DSP & Smashwords) they do usually have multiple formats. I have learned the hard way to always download both ePub & PDF. I have a Nook I love but every once in a while the ePub (or my Nook) is bugged so I switch to PDF & go to that section to see what I missed.
One thing that is good to know is that the authors get more of the money from their releases if you buy straight from the publisher, so I try to do that when I can so I can support my fav authors.
All Romeance eBooks (or ARe) is another site I use that also has multiple formats of the books they sale, but they only have the versions that the publisher originally "produced", so there are some books that are only in a few formats instead of all.
If you have a smart phone, there are different apps you can download to be able to read your books on the go if you don't have an ereader. This is how I actually started reading eBooks while recovering from surgery/on bed rest and out of paper back books and before I had gotten my original Nook.
EBooks are both a blessing and a curse. It is so easy to instantly buy & download books, I find I spend more $$ now than before hehe. But it is so worth it.

I love e-books, they are stopping my house becoming even more crowded with paper than it already is. I found a great programme that can be downloaded for free that enables me to read them on my computer, regardless of format. It is called Calibre, and I now have enough books that the ability to organise them in categories has become essential.
